Lee Silk, Partner in our Dispute Resolution team, recently secured a settlement for his client, a Claimant in defamation proceedings brought within the High Court. The proceedings involved statements made to parties involved in an underlying claim. They involved complex arguments about whether the defendant could rely on the defence of absolute privilege and whether the statements caused or were likely to cause serious harm. The proceedings settled on confidential terms that avoided the need for protracted litigation. Securing settlement on a timely basis was fundamental for protecting the client’s reputation that had been built up over numerous years and faced being compromised.
