Naturalisation is the most common way for adults who were not born British to become British citizens. To apply to naturalise as a British citizen, they will have to fulfil the residency requirements, and hold Indefinite Leave to Remain/Settled Status. They will also need to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the English Language, and Life in the UK, be of good character, and have the intention to make the UK their home. The good character requirement is mainly based on previous immigration history and an individual’s criminal history.
- Spouse of a British citizen
You can apply for British citizenship by ‘naturalisation’ if you:
- are 18 or over;
- are married to, or in a civil partnership with, someone who is a British citizen; and
- have lived in the UK for at least 3 years before the date of your application.
There are additional requirements for a naturalisation application to succeed that our lawyers have a detailed working knowledge of.
- Non-spouse of a British citizen
The requirements for a non-spouse of a British citizen include the requirement that an applicant has lived in the UK for at least 5 years at application date. The applicant must also have demonstrated compliance with the rules regarding the Life in the UK and English requirements and be of good character. UKVI (Usual) Fee: Range between £372 to £1330 for citizenship related applications. An additional £19.20 is charged for using the visa processing centre to submit biometric information and £80 for arrangement of the citizenship ceremony; &
Curzon Green (London based client) Fee: £1500-£2000 plus VAT; or
Curzon Green (Buckinghamshire based client) Fee: £1200-£1800 plus VAT.
