Naturalisation as British

Naturalisation is the most common way for adults who were not born British to become British citizens. To apply to naturalise as a British citizen, they will have to fulfil the residency requirements, and hold Indefinite Leave to Remain/Settled Status. They will also need to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the English Language, and Life in the UK, be of good character, and have the intention to make the UK their home. The good character requirement is mainly based on previous immigration history and an individual’s criminal history.

  1. Spouse of a British citizen

You can apply for British citizenship by ‘naturalisation’ if you:

  • are 18 or over;
  • are married to, or in a civil partnership with, someone who is a British citizen; and
  • have lived in the UK for at least 3 years before the date of your application.

There are additional requirements for a naturalisation application to succeed that our lawyers have a detailed working knowledge of.

  1. Non-spouse of a British citizen

The requirements for a non-spouse of a British citizen include the requirement that an applicant has lived in the UK for at least 5 years at application date. The applicant must also have demonstrated compliance with the rules regarding the Life in the UK and English requirements and be of good character. There are other requirements, and our lawyers have an excellent working knowledge of these naturalisation necessities.

British Citizenship Applications – Full Representation

Full representation is a comprehensive service, that allows our firm to become your legal representatives and to represent you in all matters concerning your application for British citizenship. This includes preparing the appropriate forms and liaising with the Home Office on your behalf.

If you decided that full representation was the appropriate service for you and your family, we would take detailed instructions from you, issue a client care letter and other appropriate paperwork to you, plan works according to what we consider to be your best interests, advise you of any documents or information that we may need to prepare the case efficiently and lodge your British citizenship application for you. We would ensure that you are updated on any key developments on your matter and remain as your legal representatives until a decision is reached on your British citizenship application.

We would endeavour to be on hand throughout the British citizenship application process to guide you and answer any questions you might have about the process. Once the British citizenship matter has been concluded, we would send you a closing letter outlining any items that we think you may wish to know moving forwards.

Full representation may not be suitable for all clients, but our experience is that for those who have utilised this service with us, they have found it to be very helpful indeed. We would encourage readers to consider the wide range of positive reviews which are available on the internet, relating to our services.
